National Statistics
- 37 percent of American children (27 million children) live in
low-income families, in families with incomes below 200 percent of
the poverty line ($27,722 for a family of three).
- 16 percent of America's children (over 11 million children)
live in poverty.
- The child poverty rate is highest for African-American (28
percent) and Latino (28 percent) children.
- 6 percent of American children (5 million children) live in
extreme poverty, in families with incomes below half the poverty
line ($6,930 for a family of three).
- Nearly 80 percent of young children in foster care are at-risk
for medical and developmental problems associated with prenatal
exposure to maternal substance abuse.
- More than half of young children in foster care suffer from
serious physical health problems.
- Over half of young children in foster care experience
developmental delays, which is four to five times the rate among
children in the general population.

The most important thing CLC does is to give kids
the feeling that somebody is there to listen to what they want. It
may not always turn out the way the child wanted, but at least they
